Tracking step by step

A great track is just as much about the steps as it the body position. By breaking the track into phases, you can focus on improving each part of your break off. Perfecting each motion will soon leave you with an impressive flat track, which you can use to leave every jump safely.

Turn

First, turn away from the center of the formation and onto your tracking heading. Instead of turning very quickly, move smoothly.

As you turn, slow your fall rate to start your flat track. Scan for other jumpers near you and along your path so you can find clear air. Once you are on your tacking line, use a fixed reference like the horizon to stay on course.

Track

Once you are on your heading, start moving into the tracking body position. Squeeze into the technique slowly, and in a controlled manner, so you fall slowly and go forward quickly. Keep scanning and looking for potential threats to your airspace.

Stop

When it is time to pull, stop tracking. Skipping this step can result in a dangerously hard opening. Once you are in neutral, calmly wave off to signal you are pulling. Keep looking as you deploy so you can react on rear risers if necessary.

When leaving a group, make each of these steps deliberately. Turning, tacking, and stopping will help you find safe and clear air to open.
